Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union Raises $3,606.46 for Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan

Alpena, Michigan, October 15th, 2009—Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union employees select four community or charity organizations that they would like to fundraise for during each quarter of the year. During the 3rd quarter of 2009, the staff of Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union chose to focus their efforts on Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. With hard work and generous support from the community, Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union was able to present Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan with a check for $3.606.46.

Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Since its inception in 1984, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan has granted more than 5,600 wishes of Michigan children. The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of American was founded in Phoenix in 1980 after seven-year-old Christopher realized his dream to become an honorary patrolman, complete with his very own badge and uniform. Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted more than 165,000 wishes worldwide. More information and inspiring wish stories can be found at www.wishmich.org.

Each Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union branch organized different activities to raise money for Make-A-Wish. Some branches held bake sales, some brought in used books to sell. Staff sold candy bars or chips at teller windows to raise money. The Lincoln Branch and Tawas Branch decorated wishing wells to collect members’ donations. The Atlanta Branch held a raffle for a digital camera. Make-A-Wish sent Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union blue wristbands and paper stars to sell for donations. Also, staff members could donate $2 to wear jeans on Fridays.

Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union serves members primarily in Alpena, Alcona, Montmorency, and Iosco counties with 8 locations—a main office located in Alpena, with branch offices in Ossineke, Lincoln, Atlanta, a Tiger Branch in Alcona Community Schools, Oscoda and Tawas offices, and an additional branch in Alpena. As of September 21st, 2009, Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union provides service to 26,900 members and has total assets equal to $233,786,169.24.

Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union Raises $2,770.00 for the Alzheimer’s Association

Alpena, Michigan, September 22nd, 2009—For the second year in a row, Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union formed a team called “Moving Assets” to participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk in Alpena. The Credit Union recruited 26 walkers and raised $2,770.00.

On Saturday, September 19th, Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union members, staff, and family met at the Bay View Band Shell in their matching “Moving Assets” T-shirts to begin the walk.

Memory Walk is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Since 1989, Memory Walk has raised more than $260 million for the cause. The 2009 Alpena Memory Walk has raised $23,316.00 and counting. All Memory Walk donations benefit the Alzheimer's Association, the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. The mission of the Alzheimer's Association is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Alzheimer’s is the seventh-leading cause of death. As many as 5.3 million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer’s. The greatest known risk factor for Alzheimer’s is increasing age. The likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s doubles about every five years after age 65. After age 85, the risk reaches nearly 50 percent.

SECOND QUARTER FUNDRAISER UPDATE

For the second quarter of 2008, AAACU focused its fundraising efforts on the Area 3 Special Olympics. Throughout the quarter, staff at all branch locations held various events to raise money. AAACU staff were pleased to present a check for $4,506.90 to Lorell Whitscell, Area Director for Special Olympics and Special Olympians.

During the third quarter all branches will be raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association.

So far in 2008 we have been able to donate $9,376.68 back to our community. We would not be able to help so many wonderful organizations without all the support we receive from our members. Once again, THANK YOU for your kindness!

Relay For Life

On Saturday, June 21st, staff members, and their families, from the Oscoda and Tawas City offices participated in the Iosco 24-hour Relay for Life. The Credit Union employees were able to raise $2,100.00 for this event.

The relay is an important fundraiser in the Iosco community. The staff at AAACU are very proud to be able to support this organization.

Alzheimer’s Memory Walk

For the third quarter of 2008 all offices focused their fundraising efforts towards the Alzheimer’s Association. On Saturday, September 13th, staff and family members participated in the Alpena Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. The purpose of the walk was to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Staff members raised a total of $1,397.45 for the Alzheimer’s organization.
